Walla Walla Roman Catholics welcome three new priests
WALLA WALLA - St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church hosted a tri-parish barbecue reception Aug. 7 for three priests recently assigned to St. Patrick, St. Francis of Assisi and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Churches here.
The Rev. Jeffrey Core was born in Great Falls, Mont., but grew up in Walla Walla and graduated from Assumption and DeSales High School before graduating from Holy Names College in Oakland, Calif. He completed his priestly formation at the Theological College of the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C., where he earned a Master of Divinity degree.
The Rev. Tyler Smedley was born in Vancouver, Wash. He attended elementary school in Odessa, Wash. and high school in Tenino, Wash. After studying at Western Washington University, he completed a degree in philosophy from Gonzaga University. He also studied theology at the Theological College of the Catholic University in Washington D.C.
Both Core and Smedley were ordained in May at Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral in Spokane by Most Rev. Blase Cupich, Bishop of Spokane Diocese.
The Rev. Gutavo Ruiz was born in Mexico City and grew up in Vera Cruz, Mexico. He entered the seminary at age 14 and received a philosophy degree from the seminary in Vera Cruz in 2003. Ruiz completed his studies at Mt. Angel Seminary in Oregon, receiving Theology and Master of Divinity degrees. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2006. He most recently served the parish in Brewster, Wash.
Core will also be on the faculty at DeSales High School.
The Rev. Patrick Kerst was appointed Pastor of the three Catholic Churches in Walla Walla by Cupich.

Village Church in CP to host weekly Best Weigh classes
COLLEGE PLACE - Village Church, 715 S.E. 12th St., will host Best Weigh classes, which meet one night per week for one hour. Sign up for the classes will be 7-8 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 at the church.
