Ex-Athena officer sentenced to prison

Mark Benton Ashcraft recieved a nearly 10-year term for sexual crimes.

PENDLETON -- Former Athena police officer Mark Benton Ashcraft was sentenced Tuesday to almost 10 years in prison for sexual crimes.

Circuit Court Judge Lynn Hampton of the 6th Judicial District of Umatilla and Morrow counties handed down a sentence of 58 months for Ashcraft's child pornography crimes and 57 months for his sexual crimes against a 15-year-old girl in 2009, for a total of 9 years, 7 months.

Ashcraft, 38, in cuffs and jail attire, was silent throughout the proceeding.

His attorney, Micheal Breiling, and family and friends had asked the court Monday for probation. State prosecutors had asked for more than 11 years, and told the judge she could sentence Ashcraft for almost twice as long.

Ashcraft will receive credit for the jail time he has served, and will be eligible for reductions in his sentence for good behavior.
