Race too close to call for Garfield County fire commissioner

POMEROY -- Final outcome of the primary race for Garfield County Fire District 1 commissioner position 1 probably won't be known until the end of the month, although ballots will be counted again Friday, county auditor Donna Deal said this morning.

In a race for a position that often goes begging for candidates, the outcome was too close to call, with incumbent Ed Bishop receiving 192 votes, or 33.1 percent of the 581 votes cast. Bishop was out-polled by Derek J. Shawley, who received 34 percent, or 198 votes. Close behind Bishop, with Justin Warren received 189 votes, or 32.6 percent.

Voter turnout was 39 percent, which was better than the 35 percent Deal predicted. She noted that although 581 ballots were received, there were actually 579 votes cast, because two ballots were blank.
