Walla Walla City Council race a nail-biter

Incumbent Dominick Elia is holding on to a second place finish in his race with Mary Lou Jenkins and Paul Mobley. Jerry Cummins and Dick Swenson appear headed to a showdown in November after the other

WALLA WALLA -- The City Council Position 7 race is turning out to be a tight one, with candidate Paul Mobley needing to close a small gap of votes or lose his chance to run in November.

As for Position 4, that, too, is technically still up in the air, but candidate Jim Hackett will have to gain 473 votes to stay in the race.

The results for Position 7 so far have Mary Lou Jenkins in the lead with 1,361 votes; incumbent Dominick Elia with 1,310 votes; and Paul Mobley with 1,262.

With 588 more votes in hand at the county election office, it is still too close to call for either City Council position, said Walla Walla County Auditor Karen Martin shortly after the polls closed.

The results for City Council Position 4 have incumbent Jerry Cummins in the lead with 1,766 votes; Dick Swenson with 1,289 votes; and Jim Hackett trailing at 816 votes.
