M. May Harting, age 89 years, of Dayton, died Aug. 15, 2011, at Walla Walla General Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, at the United Brethren Church with Pastor Greg Brownell officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in the Dayton City Cemetery. Viewing will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, at the Hubbard-Rogg Chapel. Those who wish may contribute to the charity of the donor's choice through Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home 111 S. May was born Jan. 2, 1922, in Dayton. Her parents were L.G. "Buck" and Edith Fry Payne. She was a graduate of Dayton High School with the class of 1939. She and her first husband, Floyd Startin, owned and operated the Blue Mountain Motel for 23 years. They were later divorced. Her marriage to Joe Harting would end after 22 years with his death in 1994.
Though not an architect, she had an eye for detail and designed the motel building, two homes and several remodeling projects. She enjoyed dancing at the Eagles and Elks, traveling to Hawaii and California, playing cards and taking rides in the country to watch the deer.
She is survived by a daughter, Lynn Williams of Dayton; and son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Sandy Startin of Dayton; stepson and stepdaughter-
in-law, Don and Virginia Harting of Clarkston, Wash.; and stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Diana and Mike Stricker of Spokane; five grandchildren, Danelle Startin, David Williams, Tracy Trussler, Bret Harting and Stephanie Walker; five great-grandchildren, Elaine Williams, Samatha Jo Harting, Hunter Walker, Dillon Trussler and Jackson Trussler. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two sisters, Jean Turner and Lois Harris.
