Charles "Chuck" Burnham went to be with the Lord Aug. 23, 2011, at Providence St. Mary Hospital. Charles was born on Sept. 9, 1926, in Culdesac, Idaho, to Julius and Gladys Burnham. He was preceded in death by his parents; his older sister, Kathryn King; and his younger sister, Zina Gae, at age five.
He moved to Walla Walla at a young age with his family where he attended local schools. After serving in the Navy, he came home and married Shirley Fulgham on May 16, 1947. They eventually moved to the family farm in Touchet, where they lived until Shirley passed away on Oct. 2, 2008.
Charles enjoyed bowling, traveling, fishing, playing cards and spending time with his family. He was very involved in the Touchet community where he belonged to several clubs, served as a fire commissioner, and on the board of the Alfalfa Touchet-Gardena Seed Growers.
He had been living at Regency at The Park where he had many friends among the staff and other residents. He met Betty Benson there, and she became his constant companion and best friend.
Charles was a member of New Life Assembly of God Church and for a couple of years attended Grace Christian Center as his health allowed.
He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Chad McDonald of Walla Walla; his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Bob Willoughby of Touchet; two granddaughters and their husbands, Michele and Charlie Bishop and Malissa and Tim McKewon both of Touchet. Charles is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Micah Bishop of Norfolk, Va., Luke and Makayla Bishop, Cody, Connor, Colter, Cierra Jo and Caden McKeown, all of Touchet; one great-great granddaughter, Avalyn Marie Bishop of Norfolk, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Naomi Fulgham. He also called many of his grandkids friends his grandchildren. These include Rowdy Barry and his sister Jo Deana Jenson, Maria Solis's children, Kim Niemeyer, her brother Mikey, Silvia Furia, Joey Haggberg and Sean Akari, just to mention a few.
There will be a viewing from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, both will be at Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W Alder, Walla Walla. There will be a private graveside at a later date. Contributions in Chuck's honor may be made to the Touchet Booster Club through the funeral home.
