Delbert Alvin Hansen, born Jan. 4, 1917, died Aug. 22, 2011. He was the oldest of seven children born to Albert and Margaret Leid Hansen, who farmed near Waitsburg.
Del is survived by his wife, Ruth McGovern Hansen. They were married 68 years. Additional survivors include son Paul and daughter-in-law Judy of Spokane; daughter Joan Jolly of Lynnwood, Wash.; brother Jim Hansen of Waitsburg; sisters Ruth Hansen of Auburn, Wash., and Rena Johnson of Walla Walla. He was the doting grandfather of five and beloved great-grandfather of eight.
After graduating Waitsburg High School in 1936, Delbert worked construction in Everett, Wash., and in Bethel, Alaska. He and his family returned to the Walla Walla Valley in 1946. He worked in the service department of Braden Tractor/Stone Machinery Company until he retired as service manager in 1977.
Delbert was a past exalted ruler of Walla Walla Elks Lodge 287. He and Ruth were both active volunteers at Fort Walla Walla Museum and with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a skilled wood craftsman and an avid photographer.
The graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m., at Blue Mountain Memorial Gardens in College Place. In lieu of flowers, Delbert and his family ask that memorial tributes be sent to Tall Elks through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, WA 99362.
