Fire danger prompts tighter forest restrictions

PENDLETON -- As of today, chain saws and firewood cutting will be prohibited in Umatilla National Forest.

The new restrictions are due to increased fire danger in the forest, said Chris Johnson, deputy fire staff officer. Restrictions on campfires and smoking are already in effect.

Generators will only be allowed under specific circumstances, Johnson said.

Generators may only be used when in the center of an area at least 10 feet in diameter cleared of all flammable material or when fully contained within a pickup truck bed devoid of all flammable material. Recreational vehicles with factory-installed generators are allowed provided the exhaust discharge is located in the center of an area at least 10 feet in diameter cleared of all flammable material.
