L. Joanne Fitzgerald, Milton-Freewater, passed away Aug. 25, 2011,
at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, at the age of 85 years. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at
11 a.m., at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater with Pastor Quinton Kimbrow officiating. Ritualistic services will be conducted by Loyalty Chapter #47 OES. Interment will be held at the
Enterprise Cemetery in Enterprise, Ore., on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Loyalty Chapter #47 OES.

Mrs. Fitzgerald was born on Aug. 26, 1925, the daughter of Lester J. and Reta Vest Thornburg in Enterprise, Ore. She attended school in Enterprise and later graduated from Enterprise High School in 1943.
After high school she moved to Portland and worked as a secretary, a year later she signed up for Cadet Nurses, a government program during the war years. Joanne returned to Eastern Oregon and attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande. Due to an illness Joanne was unable to complete her education but moved to Enterprise and worked in a drug store. While in Enterprise, Joanne met and later married Don Fitzgerald on March 26, 1950. The couple moved for a time to Grandview, Wash., where Don worked as a carpenter at Hanford. They would later move back to Wallowa County to raise their three children, Patrick, Debra and Pamela. Mrs. Fitzgerald owned and operated Joanne's Gifts and Flowers in Wallowa and continued to operate it until the family moved to Milton-Freewater in 1967. Mrs. Fitzgerald continued working in the flower business until her retirement in 1973. She was a former member of the Wallowa Methodist Church and current member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Blue Mountain Federated Garden Club, where she had served as director of the Blue Mountain District, a 52-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and was Grand Representative to Michigan in Oregon 2010-2012, Fruitvale Extension Group; Daughters of the Nile, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Sorority, Rainbow Board Member and was this year's 2011 grand marshal for the Muddy Frogwater Festival. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 13, 1988.

Survivors include her children, Pat Fitzgerald of Reno, Nev., Pam Fitzgerald and Debbie Jordan, both of Milton-Freewater; grandson, Jamahl Fitzgerald of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Oneta Owens of Enterprise, Ore.; three step-grandchildren; and nine step-great-
grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
