PENDLETON -- Firefighters were gaining an upper hand Monday on a wildfire on the east boundary of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.
The Elephant Rock Fire was considered 60 percent contained and mop-up was continuing, said Dwight Robanske, public information officer. The blaze had burned less than 500 acres since starting about 9:30 p.m. Saturday near milepost 23 on Bingham Road, located southeast of Weston.
No structures were threatened by the fire, although Bingham Road was closed for nearly 24 hours. The cause of the fire was undetermined and is under investigation. Robanske said.
About 180 firefighters were working on the fire. Responding departments included Umatilla Tribal Fire, Oregon Department of Forestry, Pendleton Fire Department, Hermiston Fire Department, Stanfield Fire Department and East Umatilla County Fire District.
