WALLA WALLA -- A corrections officer received minor injuries Tuesday night when he was assaulted by a Washington State Penitentiary inmate.
Prison spokeswoman Lori Scamahorn said the assault occurred at 9:15 p.m. in the prison's Rainier Unit, which houses protective-custody and inmates with mental health issues.
An inmate "took a couple of swings" at the officer before being subdued, Scamahorn said. The prisoner has since been placed in segregation.
The officer was treated and released at a local hospital following the assault. The attack is under investigation, but at this time appears to be an isolated incident, Scamahorn said.
Rainier unit is on restricted movement today, but the remainder of the penitentiary is operating normally.
