Katherine Lucille Farnes, entered into her rest on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, shortly before midnight at the age 101. Katherine was born in Butte, Montana on Dec. 6, 1909 to Nick and Danice Topsick. She was the third child of six births to this union. The family left Butte to live in a farm near Big Horn, Montana where their children attended school. After graduating from Hysham High School. Katherine entered into the nursing program at Billings Deaconess Hospital in 1933, where she completed the three year program as a Registered Nurse.
Katherine married Walter Fillmore (Phil) Farnes in 1933, in Billings. The young couple had three sons, Phillip, James, and Gary. Katherine and Phil operated the dairy farm and later a local hardware store in Worden. In 1976, they moved to Walla Walla to retire and live closer to their son James Farnes and family. In 1992, after 59 years of marriage Phil preceded Katherine in death.
As part of her retirement years, she enjoyed long walks, clogging, and aerobics. Katherine was active, loyal to her family, and well known for her story telling abilities about her life in Montana. Her handwritten cards and letters to family and friends will be cherished and missed. Her sons James Farnes and Gary Farnes preceded her in death in 2009.
Katherine is survived by son Phillip (May) Farnes of Bozeman, Montana; daughter in-law Ruth Farnes of Walla Walla; Brother in-law Paul and RuthAnn Farnes of Worden, Montana; 10 grandchildren Kathie, Glenda, Dennis, Dana, Annette, Jody, Ronda, Kevin, Scott and Randy and their spouses, 17 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, and many dear friends.
Private graveside memorial service will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in Walla Walla, on Saturday, Sept. 3rd. Memorials may be sent to Herring Funeral Home for the Pioneer Methodist Church or to the charity of their choice.
