Shoppers in the market for a tree in the Athena area can also help the Weston-McEwen Lions Club raise funds during the club's annual Christmas Tree Raffle.

Proceeds will benefit Lions' efforts with sight and hearing issues for people in need. All proceeds will purchase eye glasses and hearing aids for local people, organizers said.

Three prizes will be raffled off -- a decorated tree with loads of gifts under it; a realistic life-sized baby doll with wardrobe; and assorted gift items. Prizes are on display at the Athena Grocery Store, 313 E. Main St.

Tickets are $1, six for $5 or 13 for $10. The drawing will be 7 p.m. on Dec. 16 at Friendship Hall in Adams, Ore.

To donate items or purchase tickets, call Debi Castor at 541-566-2902; Ellyn Johnson at 541-566-3987 or Dave Lynde at 541-566-3887.

Biola University in October named Walla Wallan Victoria Henderson to its dean's list for academic excellence.

Victoria was one of 1,300 students named to the list for the spring semester of 2011.

To be included students must have a 3.6 or higher GPA while enrolled in 12 or more credit units. This past spring, 26 percent of Biola students achieved this academic goal.

Located in La Mirada, Biola's grade point average requirement for the dean's list is one of the highest among Southern California Christian Universities.
