Members of the Milton-Freewater School Board are Duane Geyer, Ken Sloan, Dennis Burks, Kelly Kessler, Michael Lesko, Tim McElrath and Don Miller. With Sloan absent Tuesday the Board:

  • CLOSED SESSION: Met in executive session for mid-year evaluation of interim superintendent.

  • LIGHTING PROJECT: Heard update on financing of the lighting and HVAC system at Ferndale Elementary School.

  • OSBA: Interim Superintendent Jim Reger and Geyer reviewed workshops they attended at a recent convention of the Oregon School Board Association.

  • BLUE HOUSE: Learned archives and fiber optic equipment stored in the Blue House behind the old district office are being removed due to a leaking roof and general poor condition of the building.

  • NOMINATION: Learned Mac Hi history teacher Liz Cahill was nominated for the National History Teacher of the Year Award. Reger told the board Cahill was declining the opportunity to apply for the award.

  • RADIOS: Learned the district has purchased "push to talk" radios for each school bus and each school.

  • BOARD GOALS: Reviewed board goals for the current year. Reger said the district is making very good progress, with a number of items already accomplished, some in progress, and some not yet started.

  • POLICIES: Voted to adopt updated board policies related to student attendance, student absences and excuses, the school nutrition program, reporting of child abuse, student records, staff's ability to wear religious attire, and student fines and fees. Unanimous.

  • DONATIONS: Accepted two donations from the Royal Neighbors for Central Middle School. The club donated $150 for hoopster basketball T-shirts and $250 for a digital camera for the advanced computer class. Also accepted $100 from Blue Mountain Growers for a fencing project at Grove Elementary, and a set of encyclopedias and update volumes from Sally Ryan for Central Middle School. Unanimous for all.

  • BARGAINING: Received letter from the Milton-Freewater Education Association regarding intent to bargain as the current agreement with the school district expires June 30.
