WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi's sophomore Patrick Giedeman placed second in three events Saturday to lead the Blue Devil boys' swimming team to a second-place finish out of 14 teams at the Walla Walla Invitational.
Giedeman placed second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.02 seconds, placed second in 100-yard backstroke (58.00), and placed second in the 100-yard free style with a time of 51.11.
"This meet showed us that the Walla Walla boys' swim team will be a force to be reckoned with," head coach Katharine Curles said.
Seniors Austin Garrett, Jon Klem and Josh Bumgardner led the Devils in their individual events.
Garret placed fifth in the freestyle, sixth in the butterfly (59.32) and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.55).
Klem placed fourth in the individual medley (1:00.50), butterfly (58.31), and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.99.
Baumgardner placed ninth in the individual medley with a 1:03.53.
Junior Zach Staudemeir placed fifth in the breaststroke (1:08.68) and ninth in the freestyle with a time of 55.05.
Freshman Russell Skorina tied for 10th in the individual medley with a time of 1:03.79; placed eighth in the butterfly with a time of 1:00.69 and third in the breaststroke with a 1:06.57.
"Considering the experience and training of these guys, swims this fast are awesome to see," Curles said, "with many also getting lifetime best times.
"The past three weeks have been full of excitement as I've seen this team improve, grow and become their own," Curles said. "After today, I'm even more excited. We are going to be a strong presence in the league, district and possibly even state standings."
Wa-Hi hosts Eastmont Saturday at 11 a.m.
