We are gathered here today to join together ... with other fair-minded Washingtonians to speak up for marriage equality.
Both in Washington state and across the country, more than half the population believes gays should be allowed to marry and receive all the rights and benefits of marriage granted to heterosexual couples. What are we waiting for?!
Well, some people aren't waiting anymore. They have formed Washington United for Marriage, which hopes to make Washington the seventh state to legalize gay marriage. They think it is possible in 2012. It is a very exciting endeavor.
To those few who oppose everything gay, I could drone on about the many reasons to support gay marriage, but I know you've already heard all the arguments. I don't want to bore you, I just want you to accept that those reasons are perfectly rational and valid.
And, I want you to move beyond anti-gay arguments because they are based on prejudice, stereotypes and fear. (Get to know a gay person - believe me, they are all around you - and you'll discover how wrong your misconceptions are.)
Gays and lesbians don't choose their sexuality - neither do heterosexuals - but they do want to be able to make the choice to get married, or not, just as any heterosexual does.
Endorse love and commitment; join Washington United for Marriage!
