LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Planned Parenthood prevents accidental pregnancies

This is in response to two recent letters to the editor regarding Planned Parenthood and abortions.

If you are truly against abortions, then you should support Planned Parenthood! Planned Parenthood does more than any other organization to prevent accidental pregnancies.

In addition, it provides education and training, primary medical care, testing and treatment to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and screening for cervical and other cancers. Only about 3 percent of services provided nationwide are related to abortion and by law, no federal funds (aka your taxes) may be used for abortion services.

For many of its clients Planned Parenthood is their only source of medical care and treatment. And Planned Parenthood will not refuse services because of a patient's inability to pay. Nearly 44,000 patients made over 51,000 visits to Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho in 2010. Where would these patients have turned if Planned Parenthood wasn't there for them? And how many unplanned pregnancies were prevented?

If you had attended the local wine auction you would have heard a local mother of four share her story; she credits Planned Parenthood here in Walla Walla with saving her life not once, but twice, through routine screenings that caught her cancer(s) early, thus increasing her chance of successful treatment.

Do you still feel morally compromised to shop or bank with a local business that helped to make her successful treatment possible?

Please join me in offering appreciation to those businesses and to our friends and neighbors who bought tickets and bid on auction items. Their generous support contributes to a healthy, more compassionate community. Let them know you appreciate their support of Planned Parenthood.
