Thomas Edward Smither, son of Elonidas and Ethyl Smither, went to heaven on Nov. 23, 2011. He was born March 8, 1925, in Belfast, Ark. He attended schools in Belfast. He played sports as a child and his favorite sport was baseball. He proved to be an excellent pitcher. He joined the Army in 1945. He was a veteran of World War II, retired from Union Pacific Railroad and was a member of Valley Christian Center Church.
He married Eurice Garner Smither on Feb. 1, 1947, in Hot Springs, Ark. They later moved to Walla Walla and then retired in Milton-Freewater. He enjoyed camping and fishing at Wallowa Lake with his family, along with trips to the coast.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Lorrene Smirl; brothers, Kenneth, Grover and Phillip Smither; his son, Ken Smither; daughters, Cindy Smither-Vasquez ans Lorri Smither.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; daughter and son-in-law, Roy and Elaine McGill Sr.; grandchildren Steve and Jenny Luther, Roy and Melissa McGill Jr., Troy and Tammy McGill and Lonnie Smither; great-grandchildren Matt McGill, Sierra Luther, Brittany McGill, Kelen McGill, Sawyer Luther, Adrien McGill, Taylor McGill, Kyle McGill, Grace Smither and Amanda Kidd.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the special needs fund at Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center or Walla Walla Hospice in care of Munsell-Rhodes Funeral Home.
The family-only graveside service and burial will be 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9. This will be followed by a memorial service to which all are welcome at 11 a.m. At Valley Christian Center church, 800 N. Main St., Milton-Freewater with the Rev. Duane Geyer and Sam Boettcher officiating.
The family wished to express their sincere appreciation to the wonderful care giving to their father by the nurses and staff of the Evergreen Milton-Freewater Health and Rehab Center and also to Dr. Ashby and staff. xx
