TOUCHET - The Touchet boys basketball team opened the season with a 71-31 victory over visiting Helix Tuesday night, gashing the Grizzlies for 29 points in the first quarter to a build a 29-6 lead and put the match on ice.

"It was just one of those games where we D'd it up," Touchet coach Tim McKeown said. "We got a lot of quick points and a lot of steals. It was pretty much out of reach in the first few minutes."

After building the quick lead, Touchet was able to get its bench some in-game experience.

"It was just one of those games where everyone got to play and it was just pretty balanced scoring, and the younger kids got to play with varsity," McKeown said. "It was just one of those kind of games where it's not a lot of coaching, but your telling the kids to focus on the fundamentals."

Helix never gave up, actually outscoring the Indians 10-6 in the fourth quarter, but they were never able to get into an offensive rhythm, only shooting 31 percent on the night.

"They were aggressive, they didn't give up," McKeown said. "They didn't have a very deep bench, but they stuck it out the whole time.

"They didn't give up one bit," he said. "I appreciate that. That to me - I give them a lot of respect."

Vicente Flores hit 6-of-12 from the floor with two 3-pointers to lead the Indians in scoring. After doing most of his damage in the first half, Flores focused on defense and passing in the second half - racking up seven out of Touchet's 17 assists in the process.

"He started out real strong - he's my top defender," McKeown said. "He's pretty much the spark plug of the team. Right off the bat he got a few quick steals and the game went off of him after that."

Eric Hines scored 15 points for Touchet off of 6-for-15 shooting and 3-for-6 free throw shooting.

Zach Sundin led the Grizzlies with 14 points. He went 5-for-10 from the floor with two free throws and Helix's only two 3-pointers.

The Indians take on Rosalia, who finished fourth in state last season, Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Touchet.
