Waitsburg-Prescott girls overcome turnovers to take 59-39 win from Rockets

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg-Prescott overcame 46 turnovers and first-game rust to come up with a 53-39 victory over visiting Pilot Rock, thanks to five 3-pointers from Krystal Harris Tuesday in Waitsburg.

"It was definitely the first game of the year," W-P coach Jerry Baker said. "There was some pretty sloppy ball handling and we tried to force a lot of passes. You usually don't win with 46 turnovers, but we shot well enough to overcome it.

"We're glad we got that (the first game) out of the way," Baker said.

Harris led W-P with 19 points on the night. Ronnie Hulce chipped in 13 as the only other player to crack double digits.

Pilot Rock held a 15-13 advantage going into the second quarter, but W-P changed up its defense to prevent 1-on-1 matchups. The change worked as W-P held the Rockets to just three points the remainder of the half.

"We didn't have much help in the first," Baker said. "They were beating us 1-on-1 in the first and then we did pretty well with some help on that."

W-P travels to North Powder, Idaho, at 5 p.m. Friday.
