WALLA WALLA - With juniors Mary Madden and Kelly Peterson providing an early one-two punch, Whitman College opened Saturday night's match with UC Santa Cruz on a 24-1 scoring spree and ran away with an 85-56 victory in the finale of the fifth annual Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic in Sherwood Center.

Madden and Peterson, former high school teammates in Huntington Beach, Calif., outscored the Banana Slugs 13-1 over the first four minutes, and senior Jenele Peterson capped the early onslaught with a pull-up jumper at the 12:01 mark.

UC Santa Cruz misfired on its first 13 field goal attempts but finally claimed its first basket - nine minutes into the contest - when Sarah Mackey put back an offensive rebound.

Mackey's bucket momentarily trimmed the Banana Slug deficit to 24-5, but Whitman countered with eight straight points to turn the game into a full-fledged rout.

The first-half Missionary lead ballooned to as many as 34 points (44-10) with just under five minutes left. Whitman was up 49-22 at the break.

Whitman, now 3-5 on the season, had five players score in double digits. The loss dropped the Banana Slugs to 3-7.

In Saturday's early tournament game, Whitworth University rolled over Pennsylvania's Lancaster Bible College 95-49.

Madden, who finished with a career-high 17 points, and also grabbed five rebounds, was named to the all-tournament team.

Jenele Peterson, who added 14 points, six assists and six rebounds, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Others named to the all-tourney team are Sarah Mackey for UC Santa Cruz, Lexi Belcher and Emily Guthrie for Whitworth, and Lauren Heliger for Lancaster.

Whitman also got 12 points from Sarah Anderegg and 10 points apiece from sophomores Meghan White and Kelly Peterson. White, who just missed a double-double with nine rebounds, also handed out four assists.

With six players snaring five or more rebounds, Whitman dominated the glass by a 52-30 margin. Senior Jenn Keyes got her hands on seven rebounds and White grabbed a game-high nine.

Mackey, for the Banana Slugs, who had 27 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots against Whitworth Friday night, finished with eight rebounds, six points and three blocks against Whitman.

Ryane Ortiz came off the Banana Slug bench to pin 19 points on Whitman. She hit five of six attempts from the 3-point line.

Whitman shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the first half and finished at 48.6 percent for the game.

Whitman returns to its home floor next Saturday for a 2 p.m. non-conference game against Portland's Warner Pacific.

On Friday, Tiffani Traver scored 15 points and White secured 17 rebounds in the Missionaries' 76-28 rout of Lancaster Bible.
