Gang member sentenced in store robbery

Corey J. Reece was ordered to serve 22 months for robbing the Conoco Zip Zone of beer.

WALLA WALLA -- A local gang member was sentenced to 22 months in prison Monday for robbing the Conoco Zip Zone of beer in February.

Corey J. Reece, 25, was also ordered to pay $1,951.20 in legal costs by Walla Walla County Superior Court Judge John Lorhmann.

He was given credit for 199 days already served in jail and after his release will be placed on 18 months community custody, a form of probation.

Reece pleaded guilty earlier this month to a reduced charge of second-degree robbery. In pleading guilty to the charge, he didn't admit guilt, but acknowledged the prosecution had evidence to convict him.

Under sentencing guidelines, Reece faced a standard range sentence of 22-29 months based on his criminal history of six previous felonies. In court Monday, attorneys for the prosecution and defense told Lorhmann they had agreed to recommend the low end of the sentencing range.

Officials said Reece robbed the Zip Zone, 110 N. Ninth Ave., about 1 a.m. on Feb. 18 by arming himself with a handgun and threatening the clerk while taking two 12-packs of beer. Reece then left in a gold-colored sedan driven by someone else.

A sheriff's deputy later located a similar car several blocks away. Several known gang members fled, but left behind open containers of the same brand of beer taken during the robbery.

Police developed evidence to arrest Reece on March 4 after viewing surveillance videos and interviewing people.
