WALLA WALLA -- Friday will be the last day to drop donations into the barrels and other containers set up through town as collection spots for the Blue Mountain Action Council Food Bank.
Ten Walla Walla businesses and nonprofit organizations have been collecting financial contributions for the food bank over the last two months in a campaign dubbed "A Barrel Full of Money." The effort is led by the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and its member wineries.
The goal is to fill barrels stationed at Olive Marketplace & Caf and the Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center, as well as canisters at wineries, businesses and other locations throughout town. A tally of the contributions has not yet been done, but wine alliance Executive Director Duane Wollmuth believes the result will be several thousand dollars.
The campaign is co-sponsored by Alaska Airlines, Baker Boyer Bank, Columbia REA, the Downtown Walla Walla Foundation and its member businesses, Integrity Design and Copy Works, Oak Tradition, Olander Design, Olive, the Marcus Whitman and the wine alliance and its member wineries.
The money will be taken to Baker Boyer Bank on Monday. A check for the final amount will be presented during a 3 p.m. ceremony next Wednesday at the bank.
BMAC's food bank is the regional distribution center for five Walla Walla food pantries, as well as pantries in Columbia, Asotin and Garfield counties. For more information about the organization or its programs visit bmacww.org or call 529-4980.
