Former Walla Wallan Betty Jean VanZandt, a retired financial supervisor for the Washington State Department of Health and Welfare, passed away Dec. 7, 2011, at Mallard Landing in Battle Ground, Wash. Mrs. VanZandt, who had lived with her son's family in Vancouver and Battle Ground since 1994, was born Betty Jean Hand on July 6, 1928, in Missoula, Mont., to William Best Hand and Lenia Martin Hand.

An avid walker, she belonged to local Volkssport organizations and participated in Volkssport events all over the world. She enjoyed needlework, reading and spending time with her family. She spent her childhood as one of seven children in Pasco, Wash., where she met her husband of 45 years, Arthur Lloyd VanZandt. They settled in Walla Walla and raised a family of four sons. They belonged to the Bethel Assembly of God Church and attended the First Assembly of God Church in later years. Arthur preceded her in death in 1994 and David, a son, died in 1990.

Survivors include three sons, Bruce of Spokane, Roger of Battle Ground, and Craig, also of Spokane; one brother, Lloyd Hand of Marysville, Calif.; two sisters, Margaret Nelson of Battle Ground and Virginia Jacobson of Pasco; eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Betty's family is planning a private memorial service in the spring of 2012. xxxx
