WALLA WALLA - A pair of Big Nine Conference opening losses for the Wa-Hi Blue Devils leaves their conference record at 0-2 and 3-5 overall.

The closer of the two games was an overtime affair Saturday night at home against the Moses Lake Chiefs, 56-54.

On Friday night, Wa-Hi fell to Richland, 54-37.

Saturday, Wa-Hi battled back in the fourth quarter, going on a 14-10 run to push the game into overtime. Josh Eggers scored nine of his team-high 24 points in the fourth quarter and Nick Peasley hit a key 3-pointer in the final stanza to bring Wa-Hi back.

With only a few seconds remaining, Robert Ferenz hit the most key shot - an offensive rebound and put-back to tie the game at 50 points each.

The opening of the four-minute overtime started well for Wa-Hi. They took a four-point lead at 54-50 on an Eggers lay-in and a Gabe Porter baseline jumper. The Chiefs followed with a free throw and a Kevin Bennett 3-pointer to tie the game with less than a minute to go.

The Blue Devils couldn't answer on the ensuing possession and the Chiefs' Dennis Ulyanchuk hit a turn-around jumper in the key with five seconds to go. Wa-Hi could only muster a desperation shot at the buzzer.

"I was proud of the way the guys came back and got the lead," Wa-Hi coach John Golden said. "Then, we just couldn't hold it in that overtime. We shot only 43 percent from the field and we've got to do better than that."

In the game against Richland, Wa-Hi got down 25-16 at the half. A 20-10 run by the Bombers in the third period sealed Wa-Hi's fate as the Blue Devils lost by 17 points.

Six-foot, 6-inch post Tanner Craynor scored 14 points for Wa-Hi. No other Blue Devil was able to score in double digits in the poor offensive output.

"We really need to shoot better than the 34 percent that we did on Friday night at Richland," Golden said. "We just need to put the ball in the hole more and be more consistent."

Wa-Hi plays again at home Wednesday against Hermiston at 7:30 p.m.
