Woman struck in College Place Walmart parking lot dies

Nellie Munden, 82, died several hours after the crash, officials said.

COLLEGE PLACE -- An Milton-Freewater woman died several hours after being struck by a car in the Walmart parking lot at roughly 1:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Nellie Munden, 82, was leaving the store near the General Merchandise door and was walking between rows four and five when she was struck, then run over by a car, police said.

Munden was transported to Providence St. Mary Medical Center where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. Munden died at 6:50 p.m., according to Walla Walla County Coroner Richard Greenwood.

According to the College Place Police Department, the driver of the vehicle was not doing anything illegal, and may have had the sun in her eyes and not have seen Munden prior to the collision.

Police reviewed surveillance video footage after the collision, and interviewed the driver of the car and witnesses.

Head trauma is the likely cause of death, but Greenwood said an official autopsy will be conducted at 1 p.m. today.

College Place police have not release information about the driver of the car.
