Dayton girls stumble against alumni

DAYTON - Dayton's alumni welcomed the Bulldog girls back from the holiday break by handing the current squad a 31-19 defeat here Tuesday.

"It was fun, it was good to see the alumni come back and play against our girls," Dayton coach Clayton Strong said. "Some of the older girls (on the current team) played with some of the alumni three years ago (when the alumni were seniors at Dayton), so it was fun for them to play against girls they were teammates with."

The alumni had the height advantage, Strong said, which helped hold Dayton to 6-of-52 shooting.

"We played pretty good team defense," Strong said. "Our transition defense wa good, we didn't give up cheap baskets. We just couldn't get shots to fall."

Camille Weatherall led the alumni with nine points, while Michelle Barker put up eight.

The Bulldogs' Nicole Lambert led the way with seven points.

"Now we just have to keep working at shooting the ball in practice," Strong said. "My girls know they can shoot the ball well, we just have to get over the hurdle now."

Dayton opens its Christmas Tournament against Kiona-Benton at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
