WALLA WALLA -- A homeowner wielding a shotgun chased off a pair of burglars this morning after being woken by noises at roughly 12:40 a.m.

Roy Schellenberg, 71, reportedly armed himself after hearing noises coming from the stairwell of his home at 605 Catherine St., according to a city police report.

Schellenberg told police he saw one suspect run down the stairs, while a second suspect came out of a room next to him and attempted to grab the shotgun.

The pair struggled and Schellenberg fell down the stairs, still in possession of the shotgun, while the burglar fled. The suspect was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, in his teens to early 20s and wearing a black shirt and light-colored pants.

Schellenberg reportedly suffered minor injuries but refused treatment. Nothing was reported missing from the home, police said.

Detectives are working on the case and anyone with information is encouraged to call police at 527-1960.
