WALLA WALLA - DeSales' boys basketball team made 8-of-12 shots from the field in the second quarter that broke open a tight game and held Liberty Christian to eight baskets on 54 attempts Thursday afternoon in a 56-25 victory during the final session of the annual D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic at Whitman College.

The Irish, who leveled their season record at 4-4, took full advantage of a short-handed Patriots' squad that was without leading scorer Jake Siefken because of an injury.

DeSales used four points by post Nick Wales, a 3-pointer by Travis Haen, and a 2-point goal off the right hand of Luke Fazzari to forge a 9-8 lead after one quarter.

The Irish connected on 4-of-5 tries from long distance in quarter two. Haen, Reilly Roach, Jeremiah Cox and Cameron Richman all cashed in from downtown to help DeSales extend its edge to 12 points, 29-17, by halftime.

Roach and Darryl Galloway contributed four points apiece in the third quarter. The Irish shot 50 percent in the frame (5-of-10) and took a 21-point margin, 42-21, into the last period.

DeSales' defense limited the Patriots to 3-for-11 shooting in the second quarter and one field goal on 16 throws in the third.

The trend continued in the final eight minutes. Liberty Christian managed just a 1-for-15 performance.

DeSales cooled off a bit in the fourth, but shot a respectable 44 percent (4-of-9).

The Irish ended the contest 21-for-43 - 49 percent. Haen and Galloway led all scorers with 11 points each.

"We can do that no matter who is defending us," DeSales coach Allyn Griffin said. "I mandated that we go to the post first and that helped out a lot."

The Irish outrebounded the Patriots, 46-32. DeSales post Garrett Leahy set the individual rebounding pace for both teams with 10.

"We didn't give them a lot of second shots," Griffin said. "We're still working with our post guys to alter shots. We did a better job of it - staying on our feet and not trying to block them."

DeSales plays its next game Tuesday at Pomeroy.
