A shooting west of Milton-Freewater left a man dead and officers searching for a suspect this morning.

The shooting at 52856 Stephens Road fatally injured Cecil 'Rob' Carter, whose home and business are at the address.

Carter was taken to Providence St. Mary Medical Center, where officials said this morning he had died.

A neighbor who was walking his dog today said he had heard numerous shots from the Carter residence.

Most of the morning, sheriff's deputies and state police warned passing motorists on Stephens Road the investigation was active and the scene remained dangerous.

Troopers stood guard near an abutting orchard, watching for a suspect possibly armed with a rifle.

Two hours after the shooting, troopers said they were still sectioning off the area and were considering calling in reinforcements.

Also in the city around 11 a.m., city police were seen in force at a mobile home park in the 200 block of North Main Street, although it was not clear whether the action was related to the shooting.

Officials had not yet named a suspect in the shooting as of press time.
