Nellie R. Munden of Milton-Freewater passed away Dec. 21, 2011, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla due to injuries sustained in an accident. The family is planning on a private family memorial service held at a later date in Richland, Ore. They will place her cremains with her beloved husband, Lee J. Munden, and parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.
Nellie was born May 7, 1929, in Richland, Ore., the youngest of 11 children to T.L. and Bertha O. Makinson Morris. She attended schools in Richland and Baker City, Ore. She married Lee J. Munden on April
28, 1944. Nellie and her husband lived in Milton-Freewater from 1945-1967 when they sold the Horseshoe Club and relocated to Wallowa, Ore., living there until 1973. They owned homes in LaGrande and Richland, Ore., until 1997, when they began traveling for several years. In 2000, they returned to the Milton-Freewater area. During those years they were temporary parents for many children other than their own, whom they loved dearly. She spent her time caring for her husband until he passed away in 2005, and then became the primary caregiver for her eldest son. She spent much of her time tending to her yard and garden as well as crafting and sewing. She often shared stories about how much she enjoyed her conversations with early morning walkers and took much pride in the appearance of her yard. Hosting visits from her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren gave her much joy.
Nellie is survived by five sons, Thomas, Dale and his wife Carol, Gale and his wife Carolyn who all reside in the area, Danuel and his wife Moni of Boise, Norman North and his wife Linda of Redmond, Wash.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and three great-nephews, Robert, Lonnie and Michael Williams. xxxx
