Warrior men down Blue Mountain at Clackamas

OREGON CITY, Ore. - Coach Jeff Reinland has come to grips with his belief that this year's Walla Walla Community College men's basketball team isn't among the best shooting teams he's had in his 19 years in charge of the program.

But the Warriors shot well enough here Thursday to put away NWAACC Eastern Division rival Blue Mountain 77-60 in a consolation-round game of the Clackamas Christmas Tournament.

The Warriors knocked down 29-of-60 shots from the floor, just under the .500 mark, and they also connected on 10-of-28 3-point attempts in running their season record to 8-4 in the non-counting contest.

More importantly, perhaps, WWCC played a steady if not strong defensive game, holding the Timberwolves to 43 percent shooting from the field and just 1-for-11 from outside the arc.

"We are not as good a shooting team as I thought we would be," Reinland said. "We shot the ball really well our first two games; since then it has been a struggle, and I'm not sure why.

"So we are going to have to gut it out on those nights when we're not shooting it well and really work on playing good defense."

Dylan Radliff, who made 5-of-11 3-pointers, led the Warriors Thursday with 25 points. Dallen Bills worked the paint for 18 points and Jay Payne and Michael Crane were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Ryan Strand led the Timberwolves with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Warriors narrowly won the rebounding battle, 38-36, with Crane collecting eight rebounds and Payne seven.

In other tournament games Thursday, Linn-Benton outscored Yakima 103-100 in an elimination game and Peninsula tipped Tacoma 78-75 and host Clackamas topped Everett 76-60 in the championship semifinals.

The Warriors faced Linn-Benton this morning at 11 for fourth place, Everett and Tacoma square off at 1 p.m. in the third-place game and Clackamas plays Peninsula at 3 for the tourney title.
