Dayton girls celebrate New Year's Eve early with first win of season

DAYTON - New Year's Eve came a day early for the Dayton girls.

The Bulldogs celebrated their first win of the season here Friday in non-conference girls basketball action.

The Bulldogs led from the get-go as Dayton led 14-5 after one and went on to post a 51-18 win over Lacrosse-Washtucna here Friday in its finale of the Dayton Christmas Tournament.

"It's nice to get one," Bulldog coach Clayton Strong said. "We played as intense game as we have all year."

The Bulldogs, with that 14-5 lead after one, put this one away with a 14-4 second-quarter run to build an insurmountable 28-9 lead at intermission.

"We shot the ball really well," Strong said. "We shared the ball really well. (On defense) we got up and pressured the ball and helped when we got beat off the dribble."

The Bulldogs got balanced scoring with Shelby Smith's 11 leading the way. Nicole Lambert added 10, McKayla Bickelhaupt scored nine, and Sumura Miller added eight.

Smith also led the Dayton rebounders with seven. Bickelhaupt added five assists as the Bulldogs combined for 14 assists on 22 field goals.

Dayton improves to 1-8 on the year and returns to Southeast 2B league play Thursday at Walla Walla Valley Academy.
