HEPPNER - The Mac-Hi boys basketball team came up just short in double overtime here Friday afternoon in the Heppner Invite, losing to Culver 69-68.

On Thursday, Heppner senior Cody Orr schooled Mac-Hi to the tune of 42 points as he led Heppner to a 58-40 victory in the first round of the invite.

On Friday, the Pioneers led 29-15 at halftime, but then coughed up the lead in the third quarter, getting outscored 20-6. The final quarter was a battle, with both teams scoring 18 points. After regulation, it was 53 apiece.

To send it into overtime, Mac-Hi had to rally in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers were down by eight points with four minutes to go and came together to tie the game with five seconds remaining on the clock to send it into the first OT.

"We put on a press," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Carlson said, "got some turnovers, some layups and 1s to get us back in the game."

The biggest shot was hit by Jeremy Ley who nailed a 3-pointer to tie with five seconds remaining on the clock.

The first overtime was a back-and-forth affair that was tied up at the end of clock by Dylan Shuler who took a handoff, turned the corner and drove to the hoop for two points. The second overtime was close, and Culver outscored Mac-Hi by one point. The Pioneers' Ley had a jumper at the buzzer after coming off a couple of screens and a setup play at the timeout. Ley's jumper hit iron and victory eluded Mac-Hi once again.

Mac-Hi had three players in double figures, as Dylan Shuler and Derek Richwine scored 18 points apiece, while Derek Richwine pumped in 14 points. Saul Ortiz added eight and Ricky Sandoval had six points.

The Pioneers had only 13 team turnovers.

For Culver, Geron Gonzales and Gabe Bolton each had 20 points.

"The guys performed pretty well all game long and executed," Carlson said. "We hit a couple of real clutch shots to tie it at the buzzers. But at the end of the day, it was still another loss."

On the play of Heppner's Orr on Thursday, "He's a pretty good player," Carlson said of the 6-foot-4 player. "He played a little bit of everything. He could drive and hit the 3-ball. When he was on the perimeter and I put a quicker guy on him, he just took it inside and started posting up."

Mac-Hi led 14-12 after one quarter, but the Mustangs rallied for a 26-22 halftime lead and dominated the second half.

"Right now I am preaching one quarter at a time," Carlson said. "Instead of trying to win the game, just win one quarter. And we had it close in the first half."

Derek Richwine led the Pioneers with 10 points.

Mac-Hi is now 0-10 and plays at home against Riverside Tuesday.
