MILTON-FREEWATER -- A faith-based student club was narrowly approved Tuesday night by the Milton-Freewater School Board.

The board had been asked to allow the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club to be established at the high school. The request was approved 4 to 3; board members George Gillette, Ken Sloan, and Don Miller were against, while members Duane Geyer, Dennis Burks, Tim McElrath and Sharee LaRue-Wright voted in favor.

Superintendent Marilyn McBride said the students made a request to the board to be able to huddle before games and pray. She said the board members against the request had concerns with whether the club would support academic enrichment, as required by board policy.

McBride said the students would now begin the process of establishing the club, including seeking members and making sure it meets the board procedures. She said students in attendance at Tuesday night's meeting said the club would be all-inclusive, and not close its doors to any students.
