Seats open for spring hunter safety course


WALLA WALLA -- If you're planning to participate in spring turkey hunting, but haven't taken the necessary hunter safety course, you're in luck. A class that will be held when local public schools are out of session early next month has openings.

All hunters born after Jan. 1, 1972 are required to show proof of hunter education course completion or a previous Washington hunting license before buying a new hunting license.

All signups are done online, seating is limited and available spaces go quickly. To enroll, students over 18 and parents or legal guardians of youths under 18 simply go to a website and follow the click-by-click steps. The site to enroll is

Classroom lecture days March 9 and 10 will start at 8 a.m. and wrap up about 4 p.m. A Saturday session includes the field test, written final examination and optional range firing, according to Dutch Meier, curriculum coordinator. Saturday requirements will run on a "round-robin" staggered start, beginning at 8 a.m. and all activities should be completed by early afternoon.
