DAYTON - The Columbia County Sheriff's office reported several cases where residents were solicited to send in checks as part of a prize-winning process.
The letters claim the checks are needed to record tax information or that the recipient must pay a processing fee.
The Sheriff's office is warning, "If you have won a lottery or contest that you have never heard of before, or actively participated in, it's a scam."
Those who received the letters can shred and discard them, or they can contact the Washington state Attorney General's office.
