POMEROY - It was another good night for the Pomeroy's girls basketball team as the team squeaked out a 49-47 district tournament win over St. John-Endicott at home.

The victory moves Pomeroy within a win of earning a spot at the Washington State Class 1B state tournament.

"It was all about locking down on defense," said guard HayLee Koller. "We buckled down and that was what got us through this game."

The game was close throughout after Pomeroy fell behind by double figures in the first quarter.

"Our girls were determined," said Pomeroy head coach Nettie Severs. "When we fell down early we just got motivated to get back in it, and by the half we were right there again."

By the break, Pomeroy (16-3) was within four points behind a balanced scoring attack that eventually produced four double-figure scorers.

Melissa Bartlow, Karlie Martin, Kindsey Bott and Haylee Koller all topped 10 points.

"Everybody contributed for us tonight," said forward Torrie Koller. "That's what it takes at this point in the season. Now we just need to stay focused and we can be headed forward."

The fourth quarter was closely contested as the two squads entered the frame knotted up, but Pomeroy maintained a lead for most of the final eight minutes, playing off a home crowd that had come to life.

"We played as a team," Severs said. "That's what decided the fourth. We played a fundamentally sound game and that's how we closed things out."

Knocking down 16 free throws on the night didn't hurt, either.

The victory sets up a game in Colfax at 4 p.m. next Saturday, with Pomeroy playing either Colfax or Rosalia.

"It's exciting to move on," HayLee Koller said. "We just need to keep winning, and I know everybody on this team is focused on that."

For Severs, the next round is all about preparation and keeping her squad focused during the break.

"This is a great group," Severs said. "I couldn't be prouder. It's really great when you can see the girls hard work pay off."
