WENATCHEE - Wa-Hi's girls basketball team lost to Wenatchee twice earlier this season.

But when it counted on Friday night in the first round of the Big Nine Conference's district tournament, the Blue Devils (4-8 in league, 8-11 overall) were able to put up a 46-39 road win.

"I'm really proud of the team," said Wa-Hi coach Jill Meliah. "We had a hard week of practice and the girls really put all four quarters together. It was our best game all season, and it's at the right time."

Andrea Hamada's 11 points led a balanced Blue Devils offense.

"It was a real team effort," Meliah said. "They all played their roles really well, with balanced scoring. Andrea stepped up, she's probably the most experienced player and she was a great leader. She did some great things."

Gabby Anderson had nine points and Kiana Molitor had eight. Anderson also led the Blue Devils with 14 boards.

Wenatchee was led by Michaela George's 18 points on the night.

The win moved the Blue Devils into the second round and into the double-elimination portion of the district tournament, beginning with a game at Chiawana Saturday evening.

The Blue Devils play again Friday, depending on the results of Saturday's games.

"I told the girls beforehand, that even though (Wenatchee) beat us twice this season, this game was more important and it was a more important time to win than the regular season," Meliah said. "That proved to be true and we play another night."
