COLLEGE PLACE - Walla Walla Valley Academy suffered a 54-53 loss to Auburn Academy of Auburn, Wash., here Friday during the semifinal round of the annual Friendship Tournament at Walla Walla University.
The Knights, who met Mount Ellis Academy of Bozeman, Mont., late Saturday night in the tournament's third-place game, saw their boys basketball record dip to 10-11 with Friday's loss.
WWVA, which led off and on in the first half, according to coach Scott Wagner, fell behind by nine points with about four minutes to play in the game. But the Knights then battled back to take a three-point lead with 1:20 remaining.
Auburn closed the gap to a single point, then hit the game-winning shot with three seconds on the clock.
"It was a heartbreaking loss," Wagner said. "After they hit the go-ahead basket, we were unable to get a shot off. Time expired."
Matt Moore led the Knights with 21 points and Daniel Lomeland added 16. Alexander Wagner pulled down nine rebounds.
The Knights opened tournament play at WWU on Thursday with a 63-18 victory over Livingstone Adventist Academy of Salem, Ore. In that game, Moore tallied 18 points, Max Sailing scored 12 and Ian Fowler led with six rebounds.
