WALLA WALLA - Whitman's 74-61 win over Whitworth in Northwest Conference women's basketball action Tuesday night keeps the Missionaries' postseason hopes alive.

Whitman is 8-7 in NWC play and 14-10 overall, while Whitworth fell to 11-13 and 7-8. The game broke a tie between the two Whits and locks the Missionaries into fourth place in the NWC.

"That was a big one for us," said Whitman head coach Michelle Ferenz. "It keeps us alive in the playoffs. We were playing pretty well, and they weren't."

Whitman needs to beat Pacific Friday to clinch the NWC's fourth and final playoff spot.

"Our destiny is in our hands," Ferenz said.

The Pirates scored first and hung close through two early lead changes and three ties before the Missionaries pulled away on a 12-1 run for a 26-14 lead, while Whitman fought a turnover bug to let the Pirates stay close.

The Missionaries took a 35-18 lead into the half, shooting 39 percent at 11-for-28, while Whitworth was just 28 percent at 6-for-21.

Whitman took off on a 21-12 run to open the second half, leading 56-29 with 12 minutes to play.

The Pirates scraped together a run and closed the gap to 63-52 in the next five minutes, but it was too little, too late, as Whitman's leading scorer Jenele Peterson sank a shot-clock-beater to put the game farther out of reach, 66-52.

"They can be explosive and I never felt comfortable until the end of the game," Ferenz said.

"Our kids responded and pushed back."

Peterson had a game-high 18 points, while not committing a turnover.

"Janele had a great game," Ferenz said. "She had great minutes for us. But we had nice contributions from everyone and it was a total team effort."
