Pioneers close season with GOL loss to Baker

Mac-Hi coach Casey Richards is excited about the future after her first season with the Pioneers.

MILTON-FREEWATER - Mac-Hi's girls basketball season came to an end with a 50-19 loss to Greater Oregon League foe Baker Friday night.

"We've come a long way from the beginning of the season," Pioneers coach Casey Richards said. "I think we've really improved our defense where the other team isn't able to run away from us."

Eloiza Meza led the Mac-Hi effort with 11 points, including both Pioneer 3-pointers.

Jessie Stephens scored 10 points to lead the Bulldogs.

Meza is one of three seniors leaving the Pioneers after this season.

"She's definitely our team leader," Richards said of point guard Meza. "We're going to miss her, not only on the court, but she's a good role model in the classroom as well as on the court. We're going to have a tough time replacing her. We're completely overloaded with freshmen, and I'm fortunate that our freshmen got to play with her."

Sarah Hinton developed her own leadership role as her senior season progressed.

"She's stepped up in the last couple games and has been one of our top scorers," Richards said. "She's more aggressive on the floor and been a leader."

Mariah McElrath brought her speed to the court in her final prep season.

"She's one of the quickest girls on the team," Richards said. "She got a lot of steals for us, and she's a big rebounder, too.

"Some teams are replacing five or six seniors," she said. "I'm fortunate to be replacing three, but they're three strong ones. I'm really going to miss them next year."

But Richards is optimistic with the progress the Pioneers, who finished 0-9 in GOL play, and 0-18 overall, in her first season with the team.

"I'm really proud of my girls, we completely scrapped the old offense and defense and started over with my plays and my offense. They picked it up and by the end of the season it was clicking.

"Looking at the JV squad, there's huge room for improvement, and I'm looking forward to the next couple of seasons."
