COLFAX - The good news for the Pomeroy girls basketball team is that they survived and earned a No. 2 seed to Friday's regional play at Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee.

The bad news for the Pirates is that Colton sank their ship in the District 9 1B girls championship game here Saturday.

Colton raced to an 18-5 lead and never let up the defensive pressure as it claimed the district title with a 56-16 win over the Pirates.

"They are really good," Pirate coach Nettie Severs said. "We had a good game plan, but didn't come ready to play. We didn't handle their pressure and they out played us in every aspect. It's disappointing as we wanted to give them a game."

McKenzie Heaslet led the tall and talented Wildcats with 12 points. Colton earns a No. 1 seed and will play Friday for a trip to the 1B tournament in Spokane March 3-5 at Wa-Hi. The Wildcats need one win, either Friday or Saturday, if they lose Friday, to punch their Spokane ticket.

The Pirates were led by HayLee Koller's seven points. Karlie Martin grabbed six rebounds for the Pirates against the taller Wildcats, who out-rebounded the Pirates 42-24.

Pomeroy, as the district 9 No. 2 seed, will play the loser of the Hunters and Almira-Coulee-Hartline battle. Their score was not available at press time. The Pirates have to win both Friday and Saturday to earn a trip to the eight-team 1B tournament in Spokane.

"We're disappointed that we didn't play well." Severs said. "But I'm proud of the girls being second in district. Hopefully, we'll bounce back and make it to Spokane."
