Marilyn Ann Bown passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2011, at her
home in Buckley, Wash., surrounded by family and friends. She was born March 30, 1947, in Portland to Frank S. and Florence M. Bown. She grew up in Walla Walla, graduating from Walla Walla High School in 1965. In 1969 she graduated from Eastern Washington State College with a degree in elementary education and began a 33-year career with the White River School District in Buckley. She retired from teaching in 2002 but continued to substitute for several more years.
Marilyn cared deeply for her community and was very involved in numerous activities during the 40 years she lived in Buckley. She joined the Buckley Kiwanis in 1987 when women were first invited to join and served as president, secretary and lt. governor for Division 30. Music was always an interest of Marilyn's. After her retirement she sang with the Cascade Foothills Chorale for several seasons and served on its board. Most recently Marilyn volunteered at the Buckley Senior Center as a van driver, and also served as a hostess and board member for the Foothills Museum. Marilyn was a longtime active member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Enumclaw, Wash.
Marilyn enjoyed hiking at Mt. Rainier and biking on the foothills trail as well as gardening. She enjoyed traveling and visited many places over the years both in the U.S. and abroad, and always endeavored to keep in touch with relatives and friends.
She is survived by one brother, Frank Bown, of Seattle; many cousins; and longtime companion, Rose Clark of Buckley. She will be missed by many friends and family.
A memorial service will be held on March 19, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Elk Ridge Elementary in Buckley.
