Pomeroy girls done after loss in state playoff round

The Pirates fall to Columbia-Hunters in a loser-out round.

EAST WENATCHEE - Pomeroy's girls basketball season ended at Eastmont High Friday night.

The Pirates lost to Columbia-Hunters 54-32 in a loser-out state playoff match, ending the season at 18-5 overall.

"Although this wasn't the way we wanted to end our season, we had a great year," said Pomeroy head coach Nettie Severs. "Our final record is 18-5, which is the best record we have had in many years. The girls can be proud of what they accomplished this year."

The Pirates were led by seniors Sadie Slaybaugh - lost to an ACL injury midway through the conference season - Karlie Martin, Melissa Bartlow, Brielle Hocking and Hailey Hyer. They finished second in the Southeast 2B, second in the district tournament and qualified for the state tournament.

"It was nice to have the experience and leadership of those girls," Severs said. "They brought the younger kids along. They will be greatly missed. Karlie and Melissa played a lot of minutes. Melissa, Karlie and Sadie qualified for state in three of their four years.

"All five of our losses were to teams that were ranked (at one point) in the top six in the state," Severs said. "It was a fun season. Our last two games against St. John-Endicott (a regular-season finale and a playoff contest) were the most intense I've coached. It was nice to come out on top of them."

The loss to Columbia-Hunters was due to an offensive struggle, Severs said.

"We had trouble getting our offense going," she said. "Each time we got some sort of a spare, we couldn't maintain the intensity and get back into the game. It was a disappointing loss, because we didn't play our best and got beat. We lost not playing our best basketball."

Martin had 14 points for the Pirates on the night, including their only 3. She also led with 10 rebounds.

Columbia-Hunter's Krista Colbin had 12 points.

The Pirates lost big on turnovers, losing 23 to C-H's 14.

With the season wrapped, Severs is pleased with the year.

"I am very proud of these girls," she said. "They are a great group to work with and I am proud to be their coach."
