SPOKANE - Waitsburg-Prescott's shooting failed to match the temperature outside at University High in elimination 2B regional girls basketball action Saturday.

Outside, the temperature reached the low 20s, but W-P only hit 9-of-52 shots from the field, a freezing 17.3 percent, as it saw its season end. Lake Roosevelt didn't do much better as the Raiders hit 17-of-59, 29 percent, but it was good enough to send the Raiders to a 43-34 win and a berth in the state 2B quarterfinals.

"We played fairly well," W-P coach Jerry Baker said. "We (just) didn't make some of the easier shots that we were looking for. We got the opportunities inside. We hammered them inside in the first half, then we kind of went away from it in the second half."

W-P fell behind 7-0 before Genesis Pearson got a put back bucket at the 5:30 mark. A Krystal Harris 3 pulled W-P within 18-10 at the end of one.

Dionna Baker came off the bench to get a bucket and hit five-of-six free throws as W-P pounded the ball inside to Baker in the second quarter. Baker's seven helped cut the Raider lead to 24-21 at the break.

Neither team could score in the third, but W-P only got a Pearson free throw with 1:01 left in the period. The Raiders got three field goals including a trey from Rickyna Sam with :47 to play in the third that propelled LR to a 31-22 lead after three.

"We didn't block out very well," Pearson said. "We didn't put the ball back up and we missed a lot of bunnies."

Harris, before leaving the game with a cut above her eye, led a last desperation charge by W-P in the fourth. Following buckets from Pearson and Katy Hofer, Harris drained two consecutive treys, her last one from NBA range, and W-P trailed 35-32 with 2:25 to play.

"Krystal started hitting from outside and just about got us back (in it)," Baker said. "But we didn't have anybody else that could shoot outside, and didn't have anybody make any baskets."

Dominique Pleasants, who led the Raiders with 12 points, scored a bucket and hit two free throws with :30.5 left to run the Raider lead to 40-32 and ice the win.

Baker and Harris led W-P with nine points each. Pearson scored seven and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

"I like rebounding," Pearson (who ended her tournament run with 29 rebounds in two games) said. "It's really fun."

W-P finishes with the first final 16 appearance since the combine of Waitsburg and Prescott, a district and league championship, and a 21-2 overall record.

"I told the girls to hold their heads up high," Baker said. "21-2 is a heck of an accomplishment. (They) need to be proud of what they accomplished.

"It (the tournament) is a learning experience for the younger girls," Baker continued. "It's a little different up here than it is in our league. Things are a bit tougher. Defenses are better (with) more pressure."

For seniors Alyssa Hafen, Megan Withers, who only played 9:52 due to a ligament problem, and Pearson, the loss marked the end of their W-P careers.

"They, all three of them, will be big losses," Baker said of the class of 2011. "They've been leaders here for the last three years. They worked hard through the summer and helped other kids that watched them play."

"It was a very good season," Pearson summarized. "It was awesome (to play with all of them). I love all these girls to death. We are used to playing together and we have good chemistry.

"I think we (the seniors) are leaving the program with good family skills," Pearson, who will play volleyball in the fall at Blue Mountain Community College, said of the class of 2011's legacy. "We worked together as a team and learned a lot this year."
