Exchange Club of Walla Walla honored Touchet High School seniors Emily Huesby and James Paul "JP" Riggs and Walla Walla Valley Academy seniors Erika Romero and Kate Sweezey with Youths of the Month Awards for February. They were recognized by club at a Feb. 14 luncheon at the Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center.
The students are eligible to compete for the club's Youth of the Year Award and a special $1,000 college scholarship.
Each one submitted an essay addressing the topic "America's youth and Community Service: Shining the light of volunteerism."
Emily is the daughter of Cynthia and Joel Huesby of Touchet. Her older sister Rachel was an Exchange Club Student of the Month in 2009. She ranks third in her class of 27 with a 3.86 GPA. She is a member of National Honor Society, a class officer and is in her fourth year playing basketball and is team captain. She's active at church and in the community.
The son of James Riggs and Laurie Chambers of Touchet, JP ranks No. 1 in his class of 27 with a 3.9 GPA. He is a member of NHS and is a Running Start student at Walla Walla Community College. He's on the vice president's list in recognition of high achievement. A scholar athlete he is a fourth-year varsity football player and co-captain. He received Defense Honorable Mention with the Blue Mountain All-Conference this year.
Daughter of Erasmo and Betty Romero of College Place, Erika is secretary/treasurer of the senior class and is taking a Community Leadership class. She wants to take nursing and attend Walla Walla University.
The daughter of Dr. Muffy Piper from Ellicott City, Md., Kate was a member of her varsity volleyball team and has also served as stage manager for the school's plays. Kate has volunteered in numerous supporting roles at school throughout her years. She has also volunteered at Blue Mountain Humane Society. She plans to take mechanical engineering at WWU.
