PASCO - Pomeroy wrestlers held their own on the mat against five bigger schools in a Tuesday night meet.

The Pirates picked up eight wins against Hanford, Chiawana and Tri-Cities Prep. Columbia-Burbank was also at the meet, although none of its wrestlers met Pomeroy at the mix-and-match meet.

"We're small and we know it, but we have some good kids on the team," said Pomeroy coach Derek Shawley. "We're midway through the season and it's good to see how our kids stack up in terms of records and how we're doing."

Tory Knebel, at 160 pounds, picked up his 17th win in his undefeated season, pinning Hanford's Cole Apgar in the second round.

Wyatt Hyer pinned Jordan Salzar from Chiawana at 125 pounds for a nice win, Shawley said.

And Mike Wymer's win over Tri-City Prep's Tevin Stutzman at 215 pounds also helped the team.

Pomeroy had 11 wrestlers competing.

At halfway through the season, Pomeroy has won one tournament and placed second twice, and Knebel's record is solid, Shawley said.

Not all of Pomeroy's wrestlers competed Tuesday. The Pirates travel to the Joe-High Tournament this weekend in Joseph, Ore., and some wrestlers were held out Tuesday by match limitations, Shawley said.

The 16-team Joe-High Tournament is an important one, he said.

"It's a big two-day tournament for us," he said.
