WALLA WALLA -- Fundraising efforts by the newly formed Friends of Pioneer Park Aviary are off to a soaring start.

Group members report having raised more than $13,000 of the $55,000 needed to fund the aviary through 2011.

On Saturday the group will hold a meet-and-greet and information booth, and members will be on hand to answer questions and encourage people to help save the aviary.

"If we present ourselves in the public at well- traveled locations, we are more apt to remind people that they can help us," group representative and City Council member Shane Laib said.

The meet-and-greet will take place at Land Title Plaza on Main Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

On Jan. 15, the group will also hold an auction and dance at the Walla Walla Elks Lodge.

Tickets for "It's for the Birds! An impromptu fundraiser to help save the Pioneer Park Aviary" are $10 and will be on sale at Saturday's meet-and-greet.
