Crash squared: Two wrecks, two arrests

Two crashes within minutes and feet of each other led to drunken-driving arrests of both drivers.

A crash scene that became the scene of a second crash resulted in two arrests early Sunday.

According to the Walla Walla County Sheriff's Office, deputies and emergency workers were called at 2:48 a.m. Sunday to a one-vehicle rollover accident at Middle Waitsburg and Martin Roads.

Moments after arriving at the location, deputies and rescue workers were aiding the driver and a passenger when a second vehicle drove through the accident site, nearly striking deputies and an emergency vehicle before it went out of control and overturned as well.

The driver of the second vehicle, Matthew Vincent Lanier, 20, 816 Figueroa St., was arrested for investigation of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving, police said. Lanier suffered minor injuries in the accident, according to police.

The driver of the first vehicle, Raul Roy Rivas, 20, 604 W. Cherry St., Walla Walla, was also arrested for investigation of driving while intoxicated, according to police reports. A passenger in the vehicle was taken to Walla Walla General Hospital for treatment of injuries.
